European countries ask women to join the army – level 1

Denmark will start military service for women. It will happen earlier than the government plans.

Women who turn 18 after July 1st, 2024, may have to join the army from 2026. Men and women will now be part of a lottery. If not enough people ask to join, the lottery will choose them. Denmark also makes military service longer, from four to eleven months. The country is spending more money on the military because of the war in Ukraine.

Not many European countries make women join the army, but Sweden and Norway do. Other countries like Latvia are thinking about it. Many countries stop military service after the Cold War, but now some are bringing it back. Germany may find it hard to do the same.

Many European nations had suspended conscription after the Cold War, but Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the war in Ukraine have changed this. Germany, for example, faces a shortage of soldiers but would need a constitutional change to introduce mandatory service for women, a politically challenging move.
