動物を救おう
Many kinds of animals are in danger of extinction.
多くの動物たちが、絶滅の危機にさらされています。
Today they are facing many challenges, such as climate change and human activities.
現在、彼らは気候変動や人間の活動など、さまざまな困難に直面しています。
It is difficult for endangered animals to survive in these conditions.
絶滅の危機に瀕している動物たちが、このような状況の中で生きていくことは難しいのです。
It is important for us to understand this.
このことを私たちは理解することが大切です。
Tl’he fastest animal needs the fastest help!
最速の動物には最速の助けが必要なのです。
Save us, or there will be trouble.
助けてくれないと、大変なことになります。

Have you ever heard of the IUCN Red List?
IUCN（国際自然保護連合）のレッドリストという言葉を聞いたことがありますか？
No, l’ve never heard of it. What is it?
いいえ、聞いたことがありません。どういったものですか？
The Red List gives us information about endangered animals, birds, plants, and so on.
レッドリストとは、絶滅の危機に瀕している動物や鳥、植物などについての情報です。
What animals are on the list?
どんな動物が載っているの？
Pandas, cheetahs, and gorillas, for example.
パンダ、チーター、ゴリラなどね。
Really? I didn’t know that.
そうなんですか？それは知らなかった。
Some animals and birds in Japan are also on it.
日本にいる動物や鳥も入っているんだよ。
I want everyone to know that.
みんなに知ってほしいんだ。
Why don’t we write an article for our class newspaper?
学級新聞に記事を書かないか？
That’s a good idea.
それはいいアイデアだ。

Let us give you one example from the Red List. It is the crested ibis, or toki in Japanese.
レッドリストからの一例を紹介しよう。それは、トキです。
Up until the Meiji era, we could see many ibises around this country.
明治時代までは、この国のあちこちでトキを見ることができました。
However, the population of ibises in Japan rapidly decreased.
しかし、トキの生息数は急速に減少しました。
People hunted them for their beautiful feathers, and development destroyed their environment.
美しい羽を目当てに狩りが行われ、開発によって環境が破壊されたのです。
It was difficult for them to survive.
トキが生きていくのは大変なことだったのです。
In 1981, five ibises were captures on Sado Island for breeding.
1981年、佐渡で5羽のトキが繁殖のために捕獲されました。
People tried to help them live safely, but they died one by one.
人々は彼らが安全に暮らせるように手助けをしようとしたが、次々と死んでいった。
The last one died in 2003.
最後の1羽は2003年に死亡した。
However, wse still had some Chinese-born idises on the island.
しかし、この島には中国生まれのトキがまだいました。
They were a gift from the Chinese goverment in the 1990s.
1990年代に中国政府から贈られたものだ。
Since then, people habe been breeding thse ibises.
それ以来、人々がこのトキを繁殖させています。
We have lost all of the original Japnese ibises, but someday ibises may fly over Japan like before.
トキの原種はすべて失われましたが、いつの日か以前のようにトキが日本の空を飛ぶようになるかもしれません。

Some gorillas are also on the Red List.
ゴリラの中にもレッドリストに載っているものがいる。
According to a study, the largest gorillas in the Congo may die out soon.
ある調査によると、コンゴ最大のゴリラはもうすぐ絶滅してしまうかもしれないそうです。
There are many reasons, such as hunting, logging, and mining.
狩猟、伐採、採掘など、理由はさまざまです。
Surprisingly, our electronic devices are one of these reasons.
意外なことに、私たちが使っている電子機器もその理由のひとつです。
To make these devices, we need some special metals.
電子機器をつくるには、特殊な金属が必要です。
Some of these metals come from the gorillas’ habitat.
その中には、ゴリラの生息地から産出される金属も含まれています。
If we use more devices, more of their habitat may be destroyed.
もし、私たちがより多くの電子機器を使えば、ゴリラの生息地がさらに破壊されるかもしれません。
These gorillas may not survive.
ゴリラは生き残れないかもしれないのです。
We have to understand this.
私たちはこのことを理解しなければなりません。
Why do we have to protect these animals?
なぜ、この動物たちを守らなければならないのか。
Each animal has its own role in the ecosystem.
それぞれの動物には、生態系におけるそれぞれの役割があります。
If we lose one species, it affects many others.
もし、ある種を失うと、他の多くの種に影響を及ぼします。
Human beings are also part of this ecosystem.
人間もまた、この生態系の一部なのです。
We are all related to each other.
私たちは皆、互いに関連しているのです。
So it is important for us to take action now.
だから、今、私たちが行動を起こすことが大切なのです。
Let’s help the animals survive.
動物たちが生き残れるようにしましょう
